I live with a person who technically is my partner but we have no legal civil union or paperwork to prove our partnership, other then that I live here, and get my mail, etc, here. He has me on his life insurance policy and what not as his beneficiary.

Now my question is, one day when he passes on, what would happen to the following?

First the life insurance. Am I still entitled to that, even though we don’t have any legal union of any sorts? I mean what if he has other family? I’m the beneficiary.

Also, what will happen to his debts/bills, and the house I live in?

Will I have to take on the debts/bills, or is that ONLY if we were partnere or what?

Will I be able to sell the house, or will I have to give it up, if I don’t keep taking over to pay for it?

Basically the question is, would having some sort of a leal partnerership, on paperwork, give me, more rights, if something were to happen?

I don’t want something to suddenly happen, and then distant family comes and takes over and boom, I’m gone, without anything and out on the street.
It is very confusing because also, this would be like a gay dometic partnership, not a hetero marriage, which would most likely mean MUCH less rights that I would have than anything else.
Also, how powerful are legal wills left by that person? If that person in their will states that he wants to give such and such to whoever, then basically that has power over what other people want right?

I want to make sure that I’m secure and that no one just come out of the woodworks and takes over and basically scr0ws me, which happens ALOT nowadays!
