Is there an easy way to get a patent in Canada, without a patent lawyer?

I have an excellent idea, but i’m not sure how to go about patenting it. If I made a lot of money i’d hire a patent lawyer, then again if I had a lot of money I probably wouldn’t resort to thinking of inventions to make money. See my dilemma? Shouldn’t the government fund a program like this?
